Purpose: Lead the Middle School drama program by teaching foundational theatre skills, directing age-appropriate performances, and fostering a supportive environment where all learners can thrive.

 

To perform this job successfully, the incumbent must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Theatre, Theatre Education, Performing Arts, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Five years classroom experience preferred
  • Prior experience teaching theatre at the middle or upper school level; experience in teaching learning-different students is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience directing plays and musicals, including managing all aspects of production.
  • Strong knowledge of acting techniques, stagecraft, theatre history, and performance practices.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends during production periods and school events.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and excellent collaboration with students, families, colleagues, and creative partners.
  • Creative problem-solving and adaptability in dynamic classroom and rehearsal settings.
  • Strong classroom management that balances structure with creativity.
  • Comfort using educational technology, learning-management systems, and digital tools related to a theatre production.
  • Embrace the tenets of Shelton School, continually developing innovative ways to strengthen the program and department for the benefit of students and educators

Essential Functions:

  • Teach Middle School drama classes, adapting instruction to support varied learning styles and needs.
  • Direct multiple drama productions each year, including occasional musicals.
  • Coordinate all aspects of drama productions, including auditions, rehearsals, parent communication, and rehearsal/performance schedules.
  • Foster a positive, encouraging classroom and rehearsal environment that builds student confidence and self-advocacy.
  • Guide students through the creative process, including acting, movement, voice, script analysis, and ensemble work.
  • Maintain Drama classroom, props, costumes, and equipment in coordination with the fine arts department.
  • Communicate regularly with students, families, and colleagues regarding class progress, expectations, and rehearsal/performance details.

  • Other duties as assigned.
