GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) Math Teacher delivers high quality instruction of the International Baccalaureate curriculum. This includes teaching multiple levels of Algebra and Geometry to Middle Years Program (MYP) students in grades 8-10.

 

JOB SCOPE

The MYP Math Teacher leads students through the IB MYP mathematics program and makes decisions about how best to prepare students for their DP courses and ultimately graduation, as well as ensuring they are prepared to be successful in their college endeavors. The job will include working with other staff members in the math department, middle school, and upper school to ensure continuity wherever possible. Additionally, a component of this role will be communicating with parents and administrators about student progress.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Implements all curricula within the designated subject area(s) following IB guidelines
  • Develops and follows a year at a glance that includes all IB connections and components
  • Develops the unit plans for each academic year based on current IB and/or other accreditation standards and other educational requirements
  • Teaches the content of MYP Mathematics
  • Extensively prepares MYP students to be prepared for their DP courses
  • Teaches the courses under the guidelines and ethos of the MYP structure and goals
  • Co- sponsors/advises the Math Club of Alcuin and provides guidance and resources to help hone their problem-solving skills, games to be played in weekly meetings, as well as preparing them for the nationally held AMC 10/12 tests held nationwide each year in November
  • Co- sponsors/advises the Mathematical Olympiad  for Elementary and Middle Schools (MOEMS) of Alcuin and provides guidance and resources to help hone their problem-solving skills in weekly meetings, as well as preparing them for five written contests held monthly beginning November
  • Posts and maintains all Upper School and Middle School grades, posts assignments, sends notifications, and accesses reports in ManageBac in a timely manner as specified in the applicable grading policies
  • Provides adequate support for student learning outside of the regularly scheduled class hours. This may be in the form of tutorials, office hours or help via Microsoft Teams or email
  • Plans, prepares, and conducts conferences with parents as one of the team
  • Communicates with parents about the progress of their student. This includes writing comments for conference reports, and email/phone communications regarding student challenges or successes in and out of the classroom
  • Keeps records of all parent communications and shares them with the Director of Upper School and/or the Director of Middle School as requested and/or as necessary
  • Stays up to date with rubrics and curriculum changes for the courses being taught
  • Prepares and submits required reports, including conference reports, syllabi, lesson plans, and ongoing unit plans and modifications
  • Takes attendance in the Alcuin School Blackbaud system
  • Serves as an MYP Personal Project and/or DP Extended Essay advisor as required
  • Maintains the designated classroom
  • Works cooperatively with other members of the Middle/Upper School faculty in the planning and execution of interdisciplinary projects, community events, and other activities
  • Attends parent education events and community functions as detailed in the Employee Handbook
  • Attends department meeting, all-staff meetings, and school functions as outlined in the Employee Handbook, employment contract or as required
  • Follows all guidelines and policies as outlined in the Employee Handbook and the Parent Student Handbook
  • Attends monthly all-staff, Upper/Middle School faculty, and department meetings as required
  • Leads or co-leads an advisory of Upper School or Middle School students and facilitates student-led conferences with families

 

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  • Maintains inventory of math calculators used in designated classes
  • Sponsors a non-math student-led club or organization as required
  • Writes letters of recommendation for students as required
  • Attends IB professional development as scheduled by the International Baccalaureate Coordinator
  • Acts as chaperone on domestic and international trips as required
  • Completes state-mandated bus driver training and drives an Alcuin bus on field trips when required
  • Completes other tasks as assigned by the Head of School, Director of Middle School or Director of Upper School

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

 

Required:

  • Ability to provide documents verifying authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Must pass Criminal Background Checks, Drug Testing, and Reference Check
  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM based field
  • 2 years high school teaching experience
  • Ability to interact and communicate appropriately and professionally in both written and verbal format with parents, students, and colleagues
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft and Google Suite of products
  • Must demonstrate and enthusiastically support the School’s Mission

 

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree or higher
  • 4+ years high school teaching experience
  • IB DP and/or MYP curriculum teaching experience
  • Working knowledge of ManageBac, Blackbaud, Naviance and Parchment platforms
  • Experience with high school level graphical calculators

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no direct reports

 

INTERNAL CONTACTS

  • Director of Upper School: The MYP Math Teacher reports to the Director of Upper School and adheres to his or her stated guidelines and requests for academic and administrative tasks
  • IB MYP Coordinator: The MYP Math Teacher receives and responds to communication from the IB MYP Coordinator regarding IB DP examinations, student progress, and academic programming
  • Other members of the Middle School and Upper School faculty, in particular math and science teachers to ensure appropriate vertical alignment of courses offered in the department
  • Members of the Student Support Team (school counselor, student support, and/or learning specialist): The MYP Math Teacher provides requested information about student performance and refers students for additional support as needed
  • Alcuin School students: The MYP Math Teacher engages with students in appropriate and respectful ways through classroom instruction, advisory sessions, student-led conferences in advisory, specific conferences to address a student’s academic performance in Math, school-sponsored community events, and/or school-sponsored travel
  • Human Resources (HR): The MYP Math Teacher responds to requests from HR and completes administrative and/or HR tasks as required.
