Organization Overview

Founded in 1938, Manzano Day School is an Independent, nonprofit elementary school for pre-k through fifth grade, nestled between Old Town Albuquerque and downtown. Our historic six-acre campus is a charming blend of adobe and contemporary buildings, warm and inviting classrooms, spacious play and meeting areas, and unique learning spaces like our Placita, garden, and meadow. Position Overview

The School Nurse provides comprehensive health services to students in an independent elementary school setting. In partnership with the other part-time nurse, the School Nurse promotes student health and wellness, supports a safe school environment, manages acute and chronic health needs, and collaborates closely with faculty, staff, and families.

This position requires strong communication, organization, flexibility, and a student-centered approach. The ideal candidate thrives in a collaborative environment and values whole-child education.

Work Schedule & Job Share Structure

  • Part-time schedule (shared weekly rotation of M/Tu and Th/F with alternating Weds.)
  • Clear communication and documentation protocols between job-share nurses required.
  • Occasional attendance at faculty meetings, school events, or professional development outside regular hours may be expected.

 

  


 

Key Responsibilities

Student Health Services

  • Provide direct nursing care to students for illness, injury, and chronic health conditions.
  • Administer medications in accordance with state regulations and school policy.
  • Monitor and support students with chronic conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, severe allergies) and develop individualized health plans as appropriate..
  • Assess students’ health needs and determine appropriate disposition (return to class, rest, dismissal, emergency services).

 

Health Records & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate and confidential student health records in compliance with state laws and FERPA/HIPAA regulations.
  • Track immunization compliance and required health documentation.
  • Maintain documentation of health office visits and follow-up communications.

 

Communication & Collaboration

  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student health concerns.
  • Partner with faculty and staff to support student well-being and classroom participation.
  • Serve as a health resource for the school community.
  • Coordinate closely with the other part-time nurse to ensure seamless coverage, consistent documentation, and continuity of care.

 

Health & Safety

  • Develop and implement school health policies and procedures.
  • Support communicable disease prevention and management.
  • Maintain health office supplies and equipment.
  • Assist in emergency preparedness planning and drills.
  • Participate in risk management and safety committees as needed.

 

Health Education & Wellness

  • Promote health education and wellness initiatives appropriate for elementary students.
  • Provide training for faculty/staff (e.g., EpiPen use, CPR/AED, first aid).
  • Support mental health awareness in partnership with school counselors and administrators.

 

  


 

The Ideal Candidate: Skills, Qualifications, and Characteristics

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment (required).
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • School Nurse certification (if required by state).
  • CPR/AED certification.
  • Minimum 2–3 years pediatric, community health, or school nursing experience preferred.
  • Experience in an independent or private school setting is a plus.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to respond quickly to emergencies.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Frequent standing, walking, and occasional bending or kneeling.
