GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY
The Substitute School Nurse supports the health and well-being of Alcuin students and employees by ensuring the consistent delivery of safe, high-quality medical care in alignment with the School’s policies and procedures. This position provides short-term or as-needed coverage when the School Nurse is unavailable and reports to the Associate Head of School for Institutional Advancement.
JOB SCOPE
The Alcuin Substitute School Nurse will address the clinical needs of students ranging in age from 18 months to 18 years under the direction of the School Nurse.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Health Services & Care
- Provide appropriate first aid or medical attention to students, faculty, and staff
- Exercise clinical judgement in triage of illness or injury to students and respond with appropriate intervention methods using aseptic techniques and proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Administer prescribed medications and treatments according to physician instructions and school protocols
- Document all visits, and care provided in the student health record system accurately and confidentially
- Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student illness, injury, or follow-up recommendations
- Support ongoing care plans for students with chronic health conditions under the direction of the School Nurse
- Health Office Operations
- Maintain the organization, cleanliness, and readiness of the Health Office
- Update charts, forms, and documentation for follow-up care
- Document supplies used while on duty for restock or replacement purposes
- Collaboration & Communication
- Serve as a compassionate, professional resource for students, parents, faculty, and staff regarding medical concerns
- Uphold confidentiality and respect for all members of the community
- School Support
- Support Alcuin’s mission, Montessori–IB philosophy, and commitment to student wellness
- Perform other duties as assigned by the School Nurse or administrative leadership
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
- Participate in safety or emergency drills as needed
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Required:
- Ability to provide documents verifying authorization to work in the U.S.
- Must pass Criminal Background Checks and Drug Testing
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Texas, in good standing
- Graduate of an accredited professional nursing program (ADN, diploma, or BSN preferred)
- Current certification in CPR, AED, and First Aid
- 1–2 years of nursing experience (school or pediatric experience strongly preferred)
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately
- Ability to react quickly, providing emergency care for accidents and sudden illness
- Ability to make sound clinical judgments and demonstrate accountability
- Ability to build positive relationships and communicate effectively and professionally with parents, students, and colleagues verbally and in writing
- Ability to provide student-centered care that is compassionate and developmentally appropriate to support students of all ages
- Ability to maintain composure and think clearly in a dynamic school environment
- Ability to manages multiple priorities efficiently with accuracy and attention to detail
- Experience with electronic record keeping, preferred
- Proficiency in office software including Google and Microsoft
- In-depth knowledge of monitoring adherence to safety regulations, as well as health and sanitation requirements

JOB CONDITIONS
- Works in general clinic environment under stressful conditions due to student health issues
- Extreme confidentiality is required due to HIPAA regulations
- Works under legally mandated deadlines for immunization recordkeeping, medical waivers, etc.
HOURS
Days and hours will vary according to the school’s needs. The school day is typically 7:45 am – 4:00 pm Monday through Friday, so the Substitute School Nurse may be asked to cover any time during those hours.
We also need Substitute School Nurses while our Alcuin School Summer Program is in session June 1st through July 24th.
