US Choir and Music Director
The Kinkaid School is seeking an energetic, innovative educator with a passion for music and students to direct and manage our Upper School Choir program. Reporting to the Director of Visual and Performing Arts, the Choir Director and Music Director is one of four vocal music faculty on the campus.
The Visual and Performing Arts program benefits from outstanding resources including a 773-seat auditorium, a 200-seat Black Box theatre, a 400-seat Recital Hall, fully operational scene and costume shops, dressing rooms, classrooms and rehearsal spaces. The choir wing contains a large rehearsal room designed to provide an excellent acoustic environment as well as an effective practice area, a shared office space, 3 practice rooms, A shared ensemble rehearsal room, storage areas and a dedicated choral library. Talented students and generous production budgets allow the School to mount an ambitious season of concerts and productions each year.
Kinkaid is a non-sectarian college preparatory day school enrolling over 1,500 boys and girls in grades pre-kindergarten through twelve. Located in Houston, Texas, the School has three divisions: Lower School (Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and grades 1-4), Middle School (grades 5-8), and Upper School (grades 9-12). Kinkaid is accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest.
The responsibilities of the Choir Director and Music Director include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Duties:
- Create and maintain a joyful space for the learning of and creation of music.
- Direct the Upper School Concert Choir, 8th grade choir, and the select choir, Encore.
- Teach AP Music Theory, if qualified.
- Direct Upper School Choir participation in a wide variety of extracurricular events including many or all of the following: Kinkaid concerts; concert field trips and tours; and competitive local, regional and state Choir events. Coordinate transportation, meals and lodging as needed.
- Serve as Music Director and Conductor for at least two musical theatre productions per year.
- Manage the Upper School Choir operating budget.
- Manage the tuning and maintenance of all pianos on campus.
- Establish and maintain open, informative and friendly communications with students and parents.
- Maintain regular school hours; evening and weekend hours are also required.
Qualifications
- A Music or Music Education Degree (Master’s degree or equivalent professional experience preferred).
- A minimum of three-years teaching and conducting experience preferably in a private or independent school.
- Significant sight-reading and keyboard skills; the ability to lead a rehearsal from a keyboard.
- Experience conducting a band/orchestra for a musical theatre production.
- Familiarity with a broad range of classic and contemporary musicals and choral repertoire.
- Collegial and committed to collaborating with members of the Visual and Performing Arts program.
