Assistant/Associate Director of College Counseling
Phoenix Country Day School seeks a full-time Assistant/Associate Director of College Counseling to join a collaborative team of four (two counselors, an essay specialist, and registrar) supporting students in grades 9–12. Reporting to the Director of College Counseling, this position will work in collaboration with the department to provide comprehensive college counseling to grades 9-12. This role involves providing individualized counseling to students, planning and delivering educational programs for students and parents, and building strong relationships with colleges and universities. The Associate Director will also assist with administrative tasks and stay informed on trends and changes in higher education and college admissions.
Key Responsibilities
Student & Family Guidance
- Counsel approximately 30 students per class through all stages of the college search and application process.
- Write personalized counselor recommendations and support students with essays, applications, and timelines.
- Advise on course selection and help students develop thoughtful, well-researched college lists.
College Admissions Engagement
- Serve as a primary liaison with college admissions offices; host visiting representatives and facilitate student interactions.
- Travel to colleges and attend regional and national conferences to stay current with trends and strengthen professional networks.
Testing & Financial Aid
- Remain informed about standardized testing and communicate updates to students and families.
- Provide guidance on the financial-aid process and required documents.
Programs, Teaching & School Involvement
- Plan and participate in college counseling programs and events for students and families.
- Co-teach junior and senior college counseling classes.
- Engage fully in the life of the school, including meetings, committees, and occasional evening/weekend commitments.
Technology & Process Management
- Use tools such as SCOIR, Veracross, College Kickstart, Google Suite, Canvas, and Zoom to manage processes and communicate effectively.
Communication & Professionalism
- Communicate clearly and confidently with students, families, and colleagues.
- Handle sensitive conversations with discretion, warmth, and professionalism.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
- 3–5 years of experience in college admission and/or college counseling, ideally in an independent school setting.
- Strong understanding of college admissions and financial aid.
- Excellent writing, speaking, organizational, and time-management skills.
- Ability to build trusting relationships, work collaboratively, maintain confidentiality, and adapt to the evolving admissions landscape.
- Flexibility, positive attitude, and strong work ethic.
