We are seeking a dynamic and passionate Middle School Social Studies Teacher to join our team. This position includes delivering engaging instruction in World and U.S. History with an ability to foster critical thinking, historical inquiry, and civic awareness while creating a classroom environment that supports student growth, curiosity, and respectful dialogue.This role also includes serving as faculty advisor to our middle school Model United Nations (MUN) Club, supporting students in developing an understanding of global issues, diplomacy, and international relations.
Enthusiasm for working in a middle school environment, a demonstrated commitment to innovative pedagogy, as well as the ability to thrive in a collaborative community that values creativity and curiosity in the classroom is essential. The ideal candidate will hold a deep passion for their role as a classroom teacher and has an appreciation for and understanding of the middle school years, particularly 12-14 year-olds. The ideal candidate will be invested in helping to create a positive community culture, working closely with their cross-curricular grade level teams, and is aware of the more complex dynamics and unique challenges that come with early adolescence. They will possess a desire to be a supportive role model and help students with increased independence and responsibility.
This individual will create a positive, engaging classroom environment and use innovative teaching methods to support student growth. They will work closely with other colleagues in the middle school and in the Upper School History Department to implement a curriculum that meets our accelerated standards while inspiring curiosity and academic excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teach Middle school social studies (World & U.S. History); a course load of 4 sections. Develop and implement lesson plans that engage students, align with our accelerated curriculum, and build critical skills of historical inquiry and reasoning.
- Serve as an advisor for 8-10 students, and guide and support the wellness program.
- Serve as the faculty advisor of Model United Nations, organizing and facilitating regular club meetings, simulations, and practice sessions and coordinating registration, logistics, and supervision for local and state Model UN conferences.
- Provide a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages active participation, respect for diverse perspectives, and fosters a growth mindset.
- Assess student progress through a variety of methods and demonstrates the ability and willingness to differentiate instruction.
- Work as a collaborative member of a grade-level and departmental team. Engage in shared middle school responsibilities and duties, including study halls and student supervision.
- Participate in faculty meetings, parent-teacher conferences, professional development activities, and divisional activities.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in history, history education, or a related field is required. A Master’s degree is preferred.
- Minimum of 3-5 years experience teaching history or social studies in middle or high school.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with students, parents, faculty, staff, administrators, and the community.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- A commitment to continuing education.
- Enthusiasm for working in an independent school community and engaging with families
