 JOB TITLE: Structured Literacy Interventionist

REPORTS TO: Language Department Chair and Wilson Coordinator

DIRECTLY SUPERVISES: None

STATUS: Salary, 40 hours/week, Teacher Contract

JOB SUMMARY: The Structured Literacy Interventionist uses research- and evidence-based methodology infused with joyful learning to support students in their reading and literacy development, use of technology, and positive self-identity. The Structured Literacy/Dyslexia Interventionist provides intensive, targeted reading intervention that reflects the principles and practices of Structured Literacy to small groups of students. Striving to work as a collaborative team member to instruct and support students in all grades with moderate to severe learning disabilities by utilizing curriculum materials adopted by the school as well as appropriate supplemental and teacher-made materials. This position will play a critical role in partnering with the Head of School and Division Directors.

DETAILED RESPONSIBILITIES & ACTIVITIES (Including Physical Function):

  • Commitment to Briarwood’s mission, purpose, and culture.
  • Strive to inspire a love of the field of study in students.
  • Partner proactively with faculty and administration to support students with different learning styles and teachers in their efforts to advance students with different learning needs.
  • Creating a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement, and self-motivation.
  • Analyzing and utilizing screening, diagnostic, and progress monitoring data (including psychoeducational evaluation reports) to develop appropriate lesson plans.
  • Delivering prescriptive, explicit, systematic, structured, multi-sensory language instruction.
  • Documenting and communicating student progress in written and verbal form to parents and administrators.
  • Assisting registrar and administration in class assignment and grouping of students.
  • Participating in and providing on-going professional learning related to structured literacy instruction and intervention.
  • Collaborating with colleagues in school- and student-improvement activities.
  • Maintaining regular attendance as documented by the number of days present and required meetings.
  • Exhibiting punctuality as observed in arrival and departure times from building and required meetings
  • Work with parents, faculty, and division heads when academic concerns arise regarding students.
  • Implement a focus on technology use and adoption within the school.
  • Represent the school at educational conferences and associations.
  • Attend all staff meetings and staff retreats.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School and the Language Department Chair and Wilson Coordinator.

 

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • Certification and/or training in Orton-Gillingham methodology required; Wilson Reading System Level 1 Certification preferred.
  • Extensive experience and training with dyslexia, progress monitoring measures (such as Acadience or DIBELS), executive functions, and assistive technology strongly preferred.

 

Experience:

  • Experience in independent schools, with a strong background in Structured Literacy
  • 3-5 years as a learning specialist, dyslexia interventionist, or related role.
  • Exceptionally capable in both written and oral communication
  • Excellent organizational and presentation skills
  • Technologically savvy, Google Suite
  • Working with students with diagnosed learning disabilities and dyslexia, grades 6-12
  • Proven success at working collaboratively 
  • Passionate about the chosen field of study
  • Affiliation with professional organizations including but not limited to ASHA, IDA, HBIDA, etc., preferred.
