Position:         Upper School Chemistry Teacher

Reports to:     Head of Upper School

 

Position Overview:
The Upper School Chemistry teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in science, including but not limited to on level Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, and AP Chemistry courses. The teacher will engage students in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills and foster a love for science. The role involves designing lesson plans, assessing student progress, and creating a supportive and inclusive classroom environment.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Design and deliver engaging, standards-aligned curriculum for on-level chemistry, honors chemistry, and AP Chemistry courses. 
  • Foster a challenging and nurturing learning environment that encourages critical thinking and meaningful discussions.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill curriculum requirements and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Implement innovative pedagogical strategies, incorporating technology and diverse learning styles to personalize student learning, making learning relevant and authentic.
  • Implement authentic lab experiences that prioritize safety and inquiry-based learning.  
  • Provide formative and summative assessments, offering clear and personalized feedback to support student progress.
  • Conduct assessments of student learning styles and use results to guide instructional planning.
  • Establish strong and appropriate rapport with students and manage student behavior in accordance with the student handbook.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues to ensure optimum educational experience for our students.
  • Foster a welcoming and inclusive classroom environment, supporting students from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Invest in the Oakridge community through attending events, supporting students, and speaking positively about the school.
  • Engage in, and seek out professional development opportunities that contribute to the ongoing growth and evolution of the classroom teaching and of the science department.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Three years of successful teaching experience in an Upper School setting (grades 9-12).
  • Demonstrated excellence in curriculum development, lesson planning, and implementing engaging instructional strategies.
  • Proven ability to effectively assess student learning and provide constructive feedback.
  • Must pass a criminal background check and have positive verification of references.

Preferred Qualifications:

  •   Master's degree in Science (Chemistry) or a related field, preferred

 Other Job Functions:

  • Attend all required meetings and perform assigned duties
  • Take all reasonably necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Serve on committees as assigned

Physical Demands and Environment Factors:

  • Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing
  • Maintain emotional control under stress
  • Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks and other classroom equipment
