Upper School Counselor (Grades 9–12) Full-Time | 10-Month Position Metairie Park Country Day School – Metairie, LA

Metairie Park Country Day School seeks a full-time Upper School Counselor to support students in grades 9–12, their families, and faculty. This 10-month position includes eligibility for a comprehensive benefits package and observance of all school-year holidays.

The Upper School Counselor reports to the Head of the Counseling Department, Division Principals, and the Head of School.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field from an accredited university
  • Minimum of three years of experience in school counseling preferred
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Experience teaching or advising students
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with students, families, faculty, and outside professionals
  • Deep understanding of child and adolescent development and the application of neuroscientific research in counseling
  • Commitment to community and belonging

 

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct counseling services to students through individual and small-group interventions
  • Collaborate with students, families, faculty, and administrators to support student well-being and address mental health concerns
  • Assist students in developing self-advocacy, coping, and problem-solving skills
  • Partner with the Counseling Department to ensure consistent, informed, and student-centered support services
  • Teach courses, including Introduction to Psychology and Health/Human Development
  • Organize and lead parent and faculty education sessions on mental health and wellness
  • Refer students to appropriate outside agencies or practitioners, and coordinate continuity of care
  • Maintain professional confidentiality and accurate records in accordance with school policy and ethical guidelines
  • Participate in school-wide crisis intervention planning and serve as a member of the crisis response team
  • Serve as an active member of the Upper School faculty, including attendance at meetings and school functions
  • Collaborate with administrators and learning specialists as part of the Student Support Team
  • Engage with the broader school community through potential involvement in after-school programs, clubs, or coaching
  • Uphold and promote the mission and values of Country Day
