Summary of Position:
St. Michael’s Catholic Prep seeks an inspirational and dynamic leader to join our community as Dean of Students. Reporting directly to the Head of Upper School, the Dean of Students will contribute to the strategic direction of our school as a key member of the administration, while building positive relationships with students and families. Ideal candidates will have a clear vision for an outstanding student experience, and demonstrate the relational skills to connect and build authentic relationships within the community. The Dean of Students is an integral part of the administrative team, working with students, parents, teachers, and administrators to support students in their academic, social, and emotional growth while advancing the mission of the school. The Dean of Students is a 12-month exempt position.
Job Details:
Responsibilities for the position include but are not limited to:
- Work collaboratively with the Upper School Head in support of operational and strategic goals.
- Collaborate with school counselors in support of student well being.
- Supervise and direct the attendance secretary's work.
- Lead and oversee student discipline structure and program
- Provide quarterly attendance reports and schedule parent meetings when student absences hit identified thresholds.
- Cross-check attendance by block and follow up with families in a timely manner relative to unexcused absences.
- Support faculty in managing classroom issues as needed
- Work collaboratively with the Academic Deans as needed and including instances of academic dishonesty.
- Communicate clearly, effectively, and in a timely manner with faculty, students and parents as appropriate regarding student matters.
- Proactively work to support a positive, balanced, and healthy student culture.
- Support 9th-grade students and families in the transition to high school.
- Oversee and communicate student leadership opportunities and engagement
- Oversee and develop structures in support of student clubs and student-driven organizations
- Ensure appropriate supervisory staffing and structures for students throughout the school day
- Collaborate with the school security team in support of campus safety
- Will have a successful history of working with young people and parents, be fully committed to the development of a well-rounded student, and have a history of professional interaction patterns with colleagues and parents
- Maintain strict confidentiality as appropriate with regard to sensitive information
- Oversee and manage student attendance data and communicate with families when appropriate.
- Assist in periodic review of the student family handbook and help to communicate updates within the community.
- Oversee all aspects of student life, and work collaboratively with the events team in support of safe and successful student events.
Required Experience, Degree and Skills:
- Must have a Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of experience
- Positive attitude towards students, staff and faculty
- Strong interpersonal skills and effective communication (written and verbal)
- Exceptional organization, time management and prioritization skills
