Position: Upper School Science Teacher
Reports to: Division Head
Role and Purpose:
The Upper School Science Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in science, including but not limited to Environmental Science, Forensic Science, and Anatomy and Physiology. The teacher will engage students in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills and foster a love for science. The role involves designing lesson plans, assessing student progress, and creating a supportive and inclusive classroom environment.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the school’s curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required
- Implement relevant and authentic pedagogical strategies, while being mindful of diverse learning styles. Appropriately incorporate technology to enhance student learning
- Keep abreast of current educational research, trends, and best practices to facilitate and guide goal setting, reflection, and professional development
- Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities
- Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits
- Provide formative and summative assessments, offering clear and personalized feedback to support student progress
- Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and is appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of students
- Manage student behavior in accordance with student handbook
- Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, administration, and teachers
- Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents and community members
- Engage actively with the Oakridge community by participating in events, providing support to students, and promoting the school positively in all communications
- Other duties as assigned by the Division Head
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Three years of successful teaching experience in a Upper School setting
- Must pass a criminal background check and have positive verification of references
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Science or a related field, preferred, with a strong understanding of science curriculum and pedagogy
- The ability to teach a wide range of Upper School science offerings. These offerings may include Environmental Science, Forensic Science, Anatomy and Physiology, or other Science courses, at on-level, honors, and/or AP levels.
Other Job Functions:
- Attend all required meetings and perform assigned duties
- Take all reasonably necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
- Serve on committees as assigned
Physical Demands and Environment Factors:
- Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing
- Maintain emotional control under stress
- Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks and other classroom equipment
