GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY
The Summer Nurse an 8-week position that supports the health and well-being of Alcuin students, employees, and summer program participants by ensuring the consistent delivery of safe, high-quality medical care in alignment with the School’s policies and procedures. The position reports to the Associate Head of School for Institutional Advancement and works in close coordination with school leadership and relevant summer program staff.
JOB SCOPE
The Summer Nurse will address the clinical needs of students and campers ranging in age from 18 months to 18 years, as well as support the health needs of employees and summer program staff, during June and July.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Health Services & Care
- Provide appropriate first aid or medical attention to students, faculty, staff, and summer program participants
- Exercise clinical judgment in the triage of illness or injury and respond with appropriate intervention methods using aseptic techniques and proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Administer prescribed medications and treatments according to physician instructions, parent/guardian authorization, and school protocols
- Support the ongoing care of students with chronic health conditions, allergies, and other health concerns
- Provide care to children who develop routine illness or injury while participating in summer programs or while on campus
- Health Office Operations
- Maintain the organization, cleanliness, and readiness of the Health Office
- Update charts, forms, and documentation for follow-up care
- Document supplies used while on duty for restock or replacement purposes
- Collaboration & Communication
- Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student illness, injury, medication needs, or follow-up recommendations
- Serve as a compassionate, professional resource for students, parents, faculty, staff, and summer program personnel regarding health-related concerns
- Coordinate with summer program leaders and administrative staff to support student wellness and safe program operations
- Escalate significant health concerns, incidents, or patterns to school leadership as appropriate
- School Support
- Support Alcuin’s mission, Montessori–IB philosophy, and commitment to student wellness
- Perform other duties as assigned by the School Nurse or administrative leadership
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
- Participate in safety or emergency drills as needed
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Required:
- Ability to provide documents verifying authorization to work in the U.S.
- Must pass Criminal Background Checks and Drug Testing
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Texas, in good standing
- Graduate of an accredited professional nursing program (ADN, diploma, or BSN preferred)
- Current certification in CPR, AED, and First Aid
- Minimum of 1–3 years of nursing experience, with school, pediatric, camp, family practice, or urgent care experience preferred
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately
- Ability to react quickly, providing emergency care for accidents and sudden illness
- Ability to make sound clinical judgments and demonstrate accountability
- Ability to build positive relationships and communicate effectively and professionally with parents, students, and colleagues verbally and in writing
- Ability to provide student-centered care that is compassionate and developmentally appropriate to support students of all ages
- Ability to maintain composure and think clearly in a dynamic school environment
- Ability to manages multiple priorities efficiently with accuracy and attention to detail
- Experience with electronic record keeping, preferred
- Proficiency in office software including Google and Microsoft
- In-depth knowledge of monitoring adherence to safety regulations, as well as health and sanitation requirements

JOB CONDITIONS
- Works in general clinic environment under stressful conditions due to student health issues
- Extreme confidentiality is required due to HIPAA regulations
- Works under legally mandated deadlines for immunization recordkeeping, medical waivers, etc.
HOURS
This is a temporary contracted position for approximately eight weeks during June and July. Days and hours will vary according to the School’s summer programming and operational needs, but the typical schedule will align with the summer program day and general campus hours, Monday through Friday. Some flexibility may be required depending on program activities, health needs, or institutional summer coverage.
