Dean of Students
Overview
The Dean of Students is a member of the Ursuline Academy School Administration Team and is responsible for implementing policies and procedures that ensure a safe, orderly, and mission-centered school environment. The Dean of Students supports the well-being of students in a manner consistent with the Ursuline mission and Core Values and plays an active role in the formation of students by modeling Christian values, supporting opportunities for spiritual growth, and helping foster a community grounded in respect, compassion, and service.
The Dean of Students fosters community, promotes a culture of belonging, and advances the Ursuline mission through the Advisory program, school-wide programming, special events, and traditions. The Four Grade Deans, Student Activities Director, and Administrative Assistant report directly to the Dean of Students. The Dean serves as a visionary leader who models and celebrates the Gospel message of Jesus Christ.
This is a 12-month position.
General Authority
The Dean of Students reports to the Principal, who reports to the President of the Academy.
Key Accountabilities
- Communicate effectively with parents regarding student behavior, activities, and concerns; respond to inquiries in a timely and appropriate manner.
- Collaborate with Grade Deans regarding student discipline, attendance, and Advisory.
- Support the Student Activities Director in planning and executing assemblies, events, activities, and clubs.
- Partner with teachers to ensure effective attendance procedures and student supervision during school hours and at school-sponsored events on and off campus.
- Participate collaboratively with the School Administration Team to plan and implement policies, schedules, school-wide activities, and the school calendar; recommend changes as needed.
- Report student behavior concerns to the Principal in a timely manner.
- Help students understand how self-discipline fosters organization and academic success.
- Collaborate with the Student Counseling Department, Dean of Academics, and Campus Ministry Team to support students experiencing personal crises.
- Maintain positive professional relationships with Deans of Students at other area schools.
- Lead the writing and revision of the Student Handbook and the school calendar.
Responsibilities and Activities
Staff Recruitment and Development
- Supervise and evaluate the Grade Deans, Student Activities Director, Administrative Assistant, Seminar teachers, Director of Student Counseling, and School Nurse.
- In collaboration with the Principal and Dean of Academics, plan and implement beginning-of-year faculty in-service, including new employee and new teacher orientation, as well as ongoing faculty development opportunities.
- Annually review the student Code of Conduct with the Grade Deans and recommend policy revisions to the Principal in alignment with Ursuline Core Values.
- Hold regular meetings with the Dean of Students Office team and Student Counseling team.
- Participate in interviewing candidates for faculty and staff positions.
Student Activities
- Collaborate with the Grade Deans to plan and coordinate annual student orientation in partnership with the Dean of Academics.
- Attend designated student events at Ursuline and, when appropriate, at Jesuit
Dean of Students Team Leadership
- Oversee and support the Grade Deans and Student Activities Director.
- Evaluate team members and provide timely feedback and professional development.
Student Safety and Well-Being
- Assign faculty and staff supervision duties, including cafeteria supervision and detention duty.
- Oversee the maintenance of accurate records related to student discipline and attendance.
- Determine when students may leave campus.
- Assist the Director of Security with required safety drills (fire, tornado, active shooter, etc.).
- Support the Student Activities Director in securing chaperones for extracurricular activities.
- Initiate parent and student conferences when serious rule violations occur and provide timely written documentation outlining decisions and expectations.
- Collaborate with Student Counseling, Campus Ministry, and the Dean of Academics to prioritize student well-being.
- Oversee the Freshman and Upperclassman Seminar curricula and assist as needed.
- Manage the Advisory program in collaboration with the Grade Deans, including Advisory conferences, while overseeing advisors and ensuring they are supported, held accountable to program expectations, and committed to excellence in advising and student mentorship.
Additional Responsibilities
- Serve on the Graduation team to plan and implement the Graduation ceremony.
- Attend Diocesan and ISAS meetings as needed.
- Collaborate with the Principal on budget recommendations.
- Assist with student recruitment and admissions as directed by the Principal.
- Serve as advisor to a designated group of students.
- Present and communicate with parents, alumnae, and the Mothers’ and Dads’ Clubs as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal.
Position Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in administration or comparable experience preferred.
- Collaborative leadership style with a commitment to cultivating leadership in others.
- Knowledge of and passion for girls’ education and the developmental needs of young women.
- Secondary classroom teaching experience required.
- Proficiency with technology, including social media and database systems.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrated depth of personal faith and a commitment to fostering and supporting the spiritual growth of students and colleagues preferred.
