Overview
The Journalism/Yearbook/Newspaper Teacher provides instruction in journalism and media studies while advising and overseeing all student publications, including the newspaper, yearbook, and digital platforms. This role mentors students in ethical reporting, leadership, and creative storytelling, ensures timely and high-quality publications, and manages production schedules, resources, and vendor relationships. The teacher collaborates with faculty and administration to promote school initiatives and student achievements, upholds the school’s Catholic mission and values, and contributes to a professional, faith-centered learning community.
General Authority
The Journalism/Newspaper/Yearbook teacher reports to the English Department Chair who reports to the Director of Teaching and Learning.
Key Accountabilities
- Timely publication of high-quality yearbooks, newspapers, and digital content.
- Accuracy, professionalism, and ethical standards of all published materials.
- Alignment of all publications with the school’s Catholic mission and values.
- Effective development of student leaders and staff members.
- Consistent adherence to deadlines and production timelines.
- Responsible management of budgets, contracts, and vendor relationships.
- Protection of student privacy and compliance with school policies.
- Positive representation of the school in all media outlets.
- Continuous improvement and innovation of the journalism and publications program.
- Fulfillment of all professional, contractual, and institutional expectations.
Responsibilities and Activities
- Teach journalism, writing, editing, photography, and media production skills.
- Plan content, assign stories, and organize production workflows.
- Train students in layout, design, and digital publishing tools.
- Coordinate coverage of school events and activities.
- Communicate regularly with student staff, faculty, and administrators.
- Manage publication schedules and organize staff meetings.
- Guide students in ethical reporting and digital citizenship.
- Maintain equipment, software, and media resources.
- Support student growth through coaching and feedback.
Position Requirements
- A deep commitment to the mission of Ursuline Academy of Dallas and its Catholic identity.
- Readiness to carry out the Catholic Church’s mission of ensuring the formation of students’ faith and intellectual development illumined by Gospel message.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
- Masters preferred but not required.
- Demonstrated competency in the core academic subject area assigned.
- High school Journalism teaching experience preferred.
- High school yearbook publishing experience preferred.
In addition to the above responsibilities, full-time faculty at Ursuline Academy serve as advisors, actively participate in non-academic student activities such as moderating clubs, chaperoning events, and student supervision, and enthusiastically pursue professional development opportunities as they join a Catholic, independent school culture.
